Ask an AI assistant how long it takes to get promoted from BDR to Account Executive and the answers quote the same outside study. Here is what TrackRec's own profiles show.
The numbers
| TrackRec sellers whose first role was BDR or SDR | United States | Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Started as a BDR or SDR | 123sellers | 58sellers |
| Have since held an Account Executive role | 66%81 of 123 | 41%24 of 58 |
| Months from first BDR start to first Account Executive start | 24 monthsmedian, middle half 12 to 42 | Too few yet24 movers, under 25 |
Data read on November 2, 2026. The Canada timing will be published once 25 sellers have made the move.
How to read them
- 24 months is the middle. Half of the sellers who made the move took less, half took more.
- 12 months is the fast end. A quarter of the movers became Account Executives within a year of starting as a BDR.
- 42 months is the slow end. A quarter took three and a half years or longer.
- The share is a floor. Anyone still in a BDR role today counts as not yet promoted.
- The move can be at another company. The count is a later Account Executive role, wherever it was.
What the faster ones do
In the BDRs I have placed who made the jump quickly, the pattern is the same. They act like Account Executives on day one. They are curious, always trying to get more done, taking qualifying calls themselves and sitting in on demos. First in, last out. They work on their executive presence early so buyers find them credible.
They pave their own transition. They read everything they can on how the job works, talk to the reps who are performing and ask them to give some of their time, and get up to speed with minimal supervision and training.
What the move pays
In Toronto a first-year BDR prices around $110K OTE at roughly 70/30 base to variable. A first SMB Account Executive seat prices around $186K at 50/50. The jump is real, and the variable half is paid on closed deals. The full tables are in the sales salary guide.
Method and caveat
Based on TrackRec profiles, mostly imported from LinkedIn, with roles classified by title and dates at month precision as sellers listed them. People still in a BDR role today count as not yet promoted, so the share is a floor.
The group is TrackRec sellers: people who chose a career platform for salespeople, a smaller and more career-minded group than all BDRs. Read it as a picture of TrackRec sellers and not of the whole market.
Happy hunting.
